                               Wilderness Navigation

Knowing how to navigate with accuracy and confidence is a great skill to master. This weekend course will give you the knowledge and the tools to navigate by map and compass in all environments. The course is also designed to give you the relevant experience if you are wishing to be qualified in National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze, Silver or Gold. The Course also includes hill safety and access issues with plant and tree identification along with seeing the abundant wildlife in the Forest of Bowland.

On the course we will cover :

  • Route planning and route cards
  • Reading the map
  • Working with the compass
  • Grid references and bearings
  • Pacing, timing and travelling on a bearing
  • Micro navigation and using GPS
  • Using handrails, backstops, attack points and triangulation
  • Night navigation
  • Navigating using nature

To gain full appreciation and experience real camping, all students are asked to camp with the Tamarack team.

The course is self catering both in camp and out on the hill, hot and cold refreshments are provided along with fresh drinking water.
