DRY STONE WALLING WEEKEND

On the beginners course you will learn the basic mechanics and construction techniques to build a dry stone wall.

The process normally consists of eight stages;

  • Stripping out - remove all stone from existing wall.
  • Sorting out - stone is sorted into size and shapes for reconstruction.
  • Setting out - to set frames and string lines for correct dimensions prior to reconstruction.
  • Footings - to organise and set footings is the first stage.
  • First lift - building stones are placed on top of footings up to knee height.
  • Through stones - these are placed at this stage to bond the wall together.
  • Second lift - Smaller stones are used at this point to the finished height of the wall.
  • Coping stones - these are to bond both sides of the wall together and to give protection with a good finish.


Course Duration - Weekend Saturday 8.30am - 4.30pm.
Sunday 8.30am - 4.30pm.

Hot and cold break time refreshments will be provided.

All tools and materials will be provided.

For this course you will need warm waterproof clothing, stout outdoor footwear and work gloves. Ideally this should be inexpensive work wear. Toe capped or other safety footwear is recommended.
